FIBA is the world governing body for basketball formed by 213 National federations of basketball throughout the world and is the sole competent authority in basketball recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It is a association for basketball akin to what FIFA is to football.
To mark eight decades of developing and promoting the game, as well as bringing together people from the four corners of the world by uniting them through the sport, FIBA has decided to mark its anniversary with a photo contest that celebrates basketball in all its diversity, called FIBA 80 Years.
80 of the best photos and moments were painstakenly chosen out of 1,100 entries from more than a 100 countries. Over 150,000 voters participated in the competition. Each country had a winner and Singapore’s winning entry belongs to photographerZack Wong.
All 80 photos will be featured in a Commemorative to be distributed worldwide to 213 National Federations as well as the world’s leading companies who are FIBA’s partners and collaborators and seen by leading figures of basketball in the global scene.
FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann said on the occasion of the launch: “Of course we urge everyone who has a basketball related photo to share it with the world. But we will be happier still seeing thousands of people use the camera on their phone and take a picture whenever they see something ‘basketball’, or bring a camera with them whenever they go to watch or play.
“The message is that basketball is everywhere and belongs to everyone.”
